Parque Mirador Sur

Roughly 6km of green corridor along Avenida Mirador Sur, described by the government film commission as the country’s first ecological park.

El Sendero del Cacao Organic Cacao Plantation Tour

A day trip from Santo Domingo to an organic cacao plantation run by Rizek Cacao, walking the cacao trail to plant a tree and learn extraction, fermentation and drying, through to chocolate-making in the factory, with lunch.

Good to know before you go

The DR is a major organic cacao producer, with tree-to-bar chocolate farm tours, plus coffee estates, waterfalls and whale watching in season.
December to April is drier; Samana humpback whales appear roughly January to March.
Santo Domingo and Punta Cana are the main gateways; guided day trips reach the cacao country and highlands.
