Cars read on what they are made of, not only what comes out of the tailpipe. Every car here carries its Green NCAP lifecycle score, the interior materials the maker publishes, whether the trim is free of animal leather, and the tyre and brake particulates nobody else reports. Non exhaust sources are now the larger share of roadside pollution, so a car that emits nothing from the exhaust is not a car that emits nothing.
