Jamaica is by far the most agriculturally real island in this region. Agriculture is 7.97 per cent of GDP, against 1.55 per cent in Barbados and 0.51 per cent in the Bahamas, and 38.5 per cent of the land is agricultural land, against 1.3 per cent in the Bahamas. It genuinely feeds itself in fresh produce. Fresh vegetables were just 2.2 per cent of the food import bill in 2018, and local production satisfied well over 80 per cent of Irish potato consumption. What Jamaica imports is the processed middle: cereals at nearly US$90 million, snacks at around US$60 million, juices and drinks at over US$45 million. It also imported US$9.2 million of banana and plantain chips and US$8.2 million of coconut products, which are made from crops it grows. That is the gap worth closing, and it is the argument for buying from the farm rather than the supermarket. Post harvest losses are estimated at 40 per cent of production.

19.9 per cent of Jamaica's land was protected in 2024, across 173 protected areas. Marine protection is 0.7 per cent of territorial waters, and that is the weakness. The flagship is exceptional, and not only ecologically. The Blue and John Crow Mountains were inscribed by UNESCO in July 2015 as a mixed natural and cultural site, 26,252 hectares of tropical montane rainforest. It is listed under criterion (iii) for the Nanny Town Heritage Route as exceptional witness to grand marronage and Windward Maroon culture, and under criterion (vi) for its direct association with the events that led to the liberation and continuing survival of communities of formerly enslaved Africans. Read that again, because it is the point: Jamaica's flagship protected area is protected partly because Maroons live in it. It is the only Caribbean site inscribed for both its forest and its resistance.

Jamaica's endemism is the richest in the region. Depending on the taxonomy you follow there are 28 to 30 endemic bird species, and the national bird, the red billed streamertail or doctor bird, is one of them. Jamaica is the only place on earth where the hummingbird genus Trochilus occurs. The national museum records 21 frog species found nowhere else, 33 endemic reptiles, and five endemic bats among 21 bat species. Two to know. The Jamaican iguana is endemic, Critically Endangered, the largest native land animal, and was considered extinct between 1948 and 1990 before being rediscovered in the Hellshire Hills. The Homerus swallowtail is endemic and is the largest butterfly in the Western Hemisphere, Critically Endangered, now reduced to two strongholds in Cockpit Country and the Blue and John Crow Mountains.

Rural water is the practical thing to plan for. Just over half of rural households were on an improved drinking water source in 2019, so ask where you are staying rather than assuming. Buy fresh and buy local, because Jamaica actually grows it. The thing to skip is the imported processed middle, which is where the food bill really goes. Eat from the calabash. Ital kitchens serve in gourd bowls, and a straw bankra basket does the job of a plastic bag, so this is one of the easier places to travel without single use plastic. Buy from the person who wove or carved it, because cheap imports have been pushing the real thing out since the 1990s. Book Maroon and Rastafari visits with the communities themselves rather than through resellers. The Rastafari Indigenous Village is reservation only and limits numbers on purpose, which is a good sign rather than an inconvenience.

Most visitors fly into Kingston (KIN) or Montego Bay (MBJ). Once on the island, route-taxis and local drivers connect the towns; hiring a local guide-driver keeps money in the community and is the easiest way to reach the Blue Mountains and the south coast.
