Quinoa was once the food for the poor, but now its our superfood. Ah.
So with this new superfood, came an increase in demand for quinoa farmers in Peru. Great! They did earn more.
…but with that.. came higher prices for locals, and here comes the greedy big players and their exploitative labor practices for more yield to supply the demand.
Where are is quinoa now? Overfarming, soil depletion, and higher local prices has made quinoa less accessible to the Andean communities that have relied on it for centuries.
Thats why people are buying fair trade. To support fair labour, fair prices and sustain the community that feeds us.
Supermarkets sell pulses and legumes a high glysophate load. I mean, high.
Glyphosate was found in 60% of conventional bean and lentil samples. …and more than 80 percent of supermarket hummus and chickpea samples.
Either avoid buying lentils from Country of origin:Canada and USA or protect yourself completely and shop organic or local.
look for where it comes from
Toxic Pesticides: chlormequat and glyphosate are found in in non-organic oats. This is confirmed in Quaker and Cheerios. In 2019, 94% of oats contained residues of more than one pesticide.
Oats are a staple, so if this is a concern shop organic.
Rice farming consumes nearly 30% of the world’s fresh water and by 2050 the world’s rice supply could decrease by almost 20% due to climate change.
Sustainable rice consumption is becoming necessary.
Washing rice helps, but buying organic is better.
Pesticides wise.. plus rice contains tricyclazole and propiconazole, two fungicides not approved in the EU due to concerns over possible DNA damage and also…Imidacloprid (RD), Lambda-cyhalothrin (RD), Tebuconazole (RD), Tricyclazole (RD), Hexaconazole (RD), Bromide Ion (RD), Propiconazole (RD), Chlorpyrifos (RD), Buprofezin (RD), Isoprothiolane (RD), Carbendazim (RD), Thiamethoxam (RD), Azoxystrobin (RD), Trifloxystrobin (RD), Triazophos (RD)).
Whatever you do, avoid Canadian, USA wheat. Their wheat is loaded with glyphosate. So when buying pasta in Europe, make sure it says ‘made in Italy’ that way you know that the wheat does not contain any glyphosate. Italy has laws against the use of glyphosate.
Neurotoxic pesticide chlorpyrifos and the pyrethroid insecticide deltamethrin are also found in wheat flour.
Be on the look out. You don’t have to shop organic, but avoid buying from those countries.
Assuming you were not force fed. Why did you do it?
You literally have the choice – and these items are a luxury.
But if you ate something like Cadburys, Milka or any of that other shit that is not on the list – then you have other problems too.
