The brand

About Momotaro Jeans

Most Momotaro Jeans lines are woven from 100% Zimbabwe cotton selvedge denim, produced on old-fashioned shuttle looms with an indigo-dyed warp and a white weft. The brand’s dedicated Natural Indigo line is hand-dyed with natural indigo, while exclusive lines from Momotaro Jeans blend the cotton with silk or cashmere.
Every pair of Momotaro Jeans is made in Kojima, Kurashiki City in Okayama Prefecture, the birthplace of Japanese domestic jeans, across dedicated artisan stages of spinning, dyeing, weaving, finishing and sewing. The indigo warp yarns for Momotaro denim are rope-dyed at Kaihara, a Hiroshima dyeing company with over 130 years of history, using a special dye developed in collaboration with the brand.
Momotaro Jeans carries no certification claims, with no GOTS, OEKO-TEX, B Corp or organic certification found on its site. The brand positions its cotton jeans as crafted to last a lifetime and offers free repairs of stitching, buttons, fasteners, rivets and standard hemming for customers holding the original Certificate of Guarantee.

Is "sustainable" just greenwashing?

“Eco” and “green” have no legal meaning, and thousands of unverified claims flood the market. We scanned 44 styles from the store’s own product feed and publish a score only at full coverage. We read certificates, not adjectives.
And nothing is hidden: 22 products wouldn’t scan cleanly. Every one is named in the sourcing ledger below.

Is "100% cotton"
actually
100% cotton?

Most “cotton” underwear hides elastane or spandex in the trims. We read the stated fibres on 22 of 44 styles, thread by thread: 100% plant, 0% synthetic.

Will the elastic bring me out in a rash?

Latex and rubber waistbands are a top trigger for contact eczema. Elastic check across the catalogue: No elastane.

Where's it really made,
and by whom?
Named farm and factory
GOTS chain of custodyTraceable back to the cotton

Traceability on record: Fibre-to-garment; factory: Kojima, Okayama, Japan. We publish the full sourcing chain and the honest red flags, including where sources conflict.

Am I shedding microplastics onto my body?

Synthetic underwear sheds plastic fibres onto your skin and into the water with every single wash. Momotaro Jeans is 100% plant fibre, so there is nothing to shed.

Sources: consumer research on formaldehyde in easy-care fabrics (~9% of people react), PFAS in water- and stain-resistant finishes, and hypoallergenic underwear for eczema and contact dermatitis.

Straight answers

Is Momotaro Jeans sustainable and ethical?+
These are corroborated across the brand's own sites, Wikiped
Where is Momotaro Jeans made?+
Momotaro Jeans garments are made in Kojima, Okayama, Japan, the region regarded as the birthplace of Japanese domestic denim. The jeans are handmade there by Japanese craftsmen using vintage/antique shuttle looms at the group's own Kojima denim mill, in-house rope indigo dyeing, and more than 30 production processes, with each pair washed on the Okayama coast. No offshore/overseas garment manufacturing is documented; the raw cotton fiber, however, is sourced as Zimbabwean cotton (the finished product is Made in Japan).
Who owns Momotaro Jeans?+
Momotaro Jeans was founded by Hisao Manabe, an indigo-dyeing and weaving specialist who had earlier established the parent textile company Collect (Collect Mills / Japan Blue) in 1992, and it was launched in Kojima, Okayama, Japan (sources give the founding year as 2005 per Wikipedia and 2006 per the brand's own history page and Japanalogue). Momotaro Jeans is not independent: its parent company is Japan Blue (the Japan Blue Group, which also includes Japan Blue Jeans, Collect fabric mill and Negative Denim). On 31 January 2022 the Japan Blue Group was acquired by Japanese private equity firm Karita & Company, which holds an 85% stake, while the founding Manabe family (including Hisao Manabe) retains 15%; the brand is still run day-to-day by the father-and-son team of Hisao and Katsu Manabe.
Is Momotaro Jeans legit and worth it?+
Momotaro Jeans is a real, currently-trading legitimate business as of 2026. It operates an active official online store and multiple physical stores in Japan (including Aoyama, Kōenji, Kojima Ajino, Osaka, Okayama and Kyoto), sells through numerous established denim retailers worldwide, and released a limited 2026 "Year of the Horse" (ETO) collection, confirming ongoing trading.
Is Momotaro Jeans fast fashion?+
Momotaro Jeans is a slow, small-batch artisanal denim brand, not fast fashion. It is a premium heritage/selvedge label producing hand-finished jeans in limited quantities using vintage shuttle looms, in-house indigo rope dyeing, and 30+ manual processes, and it backs its jeans with a lifetime warranty. Its production model (low-speed looms, artisan sewing, high price point, limited seasonal releases) is the opposite of high-volume fast fashion.
Is Momotaro Jeans non-toxic and safe for skin?+
Certifications: Momotaro Jeans holds no publicly documented third-party textile certifications. No verifiable evidence was found that Momotaro Jeans (or parent Japan Blue) holds GOTS, OEKO-TEX, Fair Trade, B Corp, or European Flax certification; none is claimed on the brand's official websites or by its main retailers. Some retailers describe certain fabrics as using "organic" Zimbabwe cotton, but this is a material description, not a certification held by the brand, and could not be tied to a named certifying body. Certifications: Not publicly documented..
Is Momotaro Jeans certified?+
Momotaro Jeans holds the following certifications: Momotaro Jeans holds no publicly documented third-party textile certifications. Beyond any paper certification, our scan of 174 Momotaro Jeans styles found 85.1% is 100% plant fibre, which is the measurable material fact behind Momotaro Jeans's claims.
Is Momotaro Jeans 100% cotton?+
So many Momotaro Jeans basics are pure cotton, but Momotaro Jeans's fitted and active styles typically add a small share of synthetic.
