Is Denim a Natural Fabric?
Denim starts as natural cotton, a plant fibre, but most modern jeans add elastane for stretch, which turns 100% natural fibre clothing into a plastic blend. We read the composition off the label so you know the real cotton percentage before the stretch is counted.
Sustainable Denim Brands We Have Tested
Below is our tested list of sustainable denim brands. The strongest are the rigid, 100% cotton jeans and the low-stretch pairs. We flag every gram of elastane, because natural clothing and stretch denim are not the same thing. See the full tested data on our natural fibre clothing brands hub.
Is denim sustainable or biodegradable?
Denim is biodegradable only when the denim is 100% cotton with no stretch. Denim is woven from cotton, a plant fibre, so rigid cotton denim composts at the end of its life. Denim stops being biodegradable the moment elastane is added for stretch, which is why we read the composition of every pair of jeans.
Why is stretch denim a problem?
Stretch denim is a problem because stretch denim hides plastic in the weave. Stretch denim usually contains one to three percent elastane, and that elastane cannot be separated out or composted. Stretch denim also cannot be recycled cleanly, so a pair of stretch jeans ends its life as landfill, unlike rigid cotton denim.
What should I look for in eco denim?
Eco denim should be 100% cotton, ideally organic, with no elastane in the composition. Eco denim from organic cotton avoids the pesticides of conventional cotton farming. Eco denim that states its exact cotton percentage on the label is the only denim we pass, because a real cotton figure is the difference between compostable jeans and plastic-blended jeans.
Which denim brands pass the test?
The denim brands that pass are the ones making rigid, 100% cotton jeans with no elastane, listed above and read label by label. Any denim brand that blends elastane into the cotton is flagged on the list, however sustainable the marketing sounds. We only pass denim where the stated composition is genuinely plastic free.
What You Put On Your Body Is a Sacred Act
Clothing is intimate. It lives against our skin and moves with us through the world. Yet fast fashion has made it a source of harm, flooding the planet with pollution, toxic chemicals, and synthetic fibres that dishonour both people and Earth. Choose to dress with intention.
