Is there biodegradable or plastic-free swimwear?
Truly plastic-free swimwear is very rare, because swimwear needs stretch and stretch normally comes from elastane. Most swimwear is polyester or nylon with elastane, so most swimwear is plastic that sheds microfibres in the sea. Genuinely low-plastic swimwear is the exception, which is why the swimwear list above is short and read label by label.
Is recycled or Econyl swimwear eco-friendly?
Recycled swimwear and Econyl swimwear are still plastic, so recycled swimwear is not plastic free. Econyl is regenerated nylon, and Econyl sheds microplastics in the wash and the water exactly like virgin nylon. Recycled swimwear does cut new oil use, so recycled swimwear is a lesser harm, but recycled swimwear is not a natural or biodegradable fabric.
Can swimwear be made from natural fibre?
Swimwear can only partly be made from natural fibre, because plant fibres do not hold their shape when wet. Some brands blend natural rubber or organic cotton into swimwear, but swimwear almost always needs some synthetic stretch to fit. This is why swimwear is judged on how little plastic it uses, not on being fully natural.
