Balmain

This report documents what Balmain publishes about its ownership and supply chain — see the sourcing and transparency sections below. Balmain’s supply-chain transparency is rated 1 out of 5.

Balmain’s product range has not been scanned product-by-product to the Throne Standard, so no whole-catalogue fibre percentage is shown here — a headline fibre figure is only published once 100% of a catalogue has been read.

About Balmain

Documented facts: Balmain scores poorly on the independent Good On You assessment, which rates it “We Avoid” overall, with Planet 1 out of 5, People 1 out of 5 and Animals 2 out of 5 (assessment last updated May 2022). That review found no evidence Balmain sets greenhouse gas reduction targets, takes meaningful action on hazardous chemicals or water use, publishes a supplier code of conduct, audits its supply chain, or ensures a living wage for supply-chain workers;
Balmain does not publish a full, primary-source list of its manufacturing sites, so precise country-of-origin data is only partially documented. As a Paris-based luxury maison, Balmain describes made-to-measure and atelier pieces produced in France. Secondary retail and fashion sources (not Balmain’s own primary disclosure) report that most Balmain ready-to-wear is manufactured across Italy, Portugal, France and Bulgaria, that footwear is designed in France but largely produced in China with some leather styles made in Italy, and that many accessories are made in France. These country claims come from secondary sources rather than an official Balmain supply-chain disclosure and should be treated as indicative rather than confirmed.
Balmain is a French luxury fashion house founded in 1945 by couturier Pierre Balmain (1914 to 1982) in Paris, where he opened his own house at 44 rue François 1er and showed his first collection in October 1945. Balmain is not independent: since 2016 it has been owned by Mayhoola for Investments, a Qatari holding company linked to the Qatari royal family that also owns Valentino, which bought Balmain for a reported sum close to 500 million euros. Rachid Mohamed Rachid is chief executive of Mayhoola and chairman of Balmain. The house is headquartered in Paris. Olivier Rousteing was creative director from 2011 until his departure announced in November 2025; per Wikipedia, Antonin Tron was subsequently named to lead the house.
Balmain is a real, currently trading, legitimate luxury fashion business, not defunct. It operates as an active maison owned by Mayhoola, runs over 50 stores worldwide with flagships in Paris (Rue Saint-Honoré), Tokyo, New York, London and Milan, continues to show ready-to-wear and haute couture, and undertook a high-profile creative-director transition in late 2025. This is the clothing and couture house Balmain, distinct from unrelated same-name entities such as Australian place names or other businesses.
Balmain is a high-priced luxury designer house rather than a traditional fast-fashion retailer, producing seasonal ready-to-wear, haute couture (revived in 2019), accessories and beauty. However, it is not a slow, small-batch or artisanal-ethics brand either: it operates at global luxury scale with frequent seasonal collections and has pursued mass-market reach through collaborations such as the 2015 Balmain x H&M line. In short, Balmain sits in the luxury tier, not fast fashion, but it does not qualify as a slow or low-volume sustainable label.
Balmain is a mixed-material brand.
How we scan. Every figure comes from the Throne Standard scan: we read the fibre composition off each live product, style by style, and count only single-fibre plant cloth (cotton, linen, hemp) as natural. Animal and plastic-based synthetic fibres sit outside the plant-fibre figure, and regenerated fibres such as viscose, rayon, modal and Tencel are counted as semi-synthetic.
