About Blueview

Owner · Blueview was co-founded by Dr. Stephen Mayfield (CEO), a distinguished professor of biology at UC San Diego and founder of Algenesis Corporation, and Tom Cooke (President), formerly VP of Product at Reef and a footwear director at Vans.

Blueview is the US footwear brand behind the world's first fully biodegradable shoe, the BLUEVIEW Pacific, launched in 2020 from La Jolla, California. Every component of a Blueview shoe. The knitted hemp, TENCEL Lyocell (eucalyptus) and organic cotton upper; the jute strobel; and the Soleic plant-based polyurethane insole, cupsole and outsole, is designed to return to the earth rather than persist as microplastics, with the whole Pacific biodegrading in under a year in industrial composting conditions. The brand was co-founded by Dr. Stephen Mayfield, a distinguished professor of biology at UC San Diego and founder of the materials company Algenesis, and Tom Cooke, formerly VP of Product at Reef, and carries a USDA BioPreferred bio-content certification of 58% on both the Pacific and the Atlantic.

Summary of findings

Blueview is a US footwear brand whose BLUEVIEW Pacific and Atlantic shoes are made entirely from plant-based materials, knitted hemp, TENCEL eucalyptus and organic cotton uppers with jute strobels, and Soleic plant-oil polyurethane soles, advertised as the world’s first fully biodegradable shoe. Its Shopify catalogue was readable: 12 products found, the gift card excluded as non-textile, and all 11 footwear products state their materials, so the fibre-linked coverage figure is 100%. The brand publishes USDA BioPreferred bio-content (58%), a peer-reviewed biodegradation paper and third-party ASTM D5338 compost tests, but discloses no manufacturing country, mills or supplier list.

Brand ResponseBlueview's position is that the answer to footwear plastic waste is in the material itself: it states its shoes are made with no petroleum-based plastics and no animal products, built instead from plant-based hemp, eucalyptus and organic cotton knits and Soleic plant-oil polyurethane. The biodegradation claim is backed by a peer-reviewed paper on the Soleic foam, third-party ASTM D5338 compost tests and a USDA BioPreferred bio-based certification of 58%. The brand is careful about the wording: components biodegrade under industrial composting conditions within months, the whole shoe in under a year, and the footwear is not 'compostable' under California's legal definition. What it does not disclose is where its shoes are made: no country of manufacture, mill or factory names and no supplier list are published.
Feature 2The defining Blueview claim is that its shoes biodegrade rather than persist: the uppers and insoles biodegrade under industrial (thermophilic) composting conditions within a few months, the cupsoles and outsoles more slowly, and the whole BLUEVIEW Pacific in less than a year. The Soleic foam's biodegradation is described in the peer-reviewed paper 'Rapid biodegradation of renewable polyurethane foams with identification of associated microorganisms and decomposition products' and verified by third-party ASTM D5338 compost testing, with the brand stating the end products are biomass and CO2, not microplastics. Blueview is careful to note its shoes are not 'compostable' under the California legal definition.
Feature 3Blueview markets the Pacific as a lightweight, machine-washable slip-on with an ocean-of-comfort, anatomically contoured Soleic sole and arch support, citing a durability test at Heeluxe Labs in Santa Barbara that beat the industry footwear average. It ships free within the United States, and the underlying chemistry came from UC San Diego professors Stephen Mayfield, Michael Burkart and Robert Pomeroy, with roughly $15 million in government grants behind the Soleic work. Blueview has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company and Trend Hunter.

Shipping InternationalAt the time of this check Blueview ships to the United States only.
Shipping NotesReturns must be unworn, undamaged, unwashed and in their original packaging, started through the brand's online return portal. Sizes are unisex and largely fit true to size; the shoes are machine washable, with the Soleic insoles hand-washed and air dried.

Sourcing transparency score (1-5)2
Supply-chain summaryBlueview is a US footwear company co-founded by UC San Diego professor Stephen Mayfield and Reef/Vans veteran Tom Cooke, built around the Soleic plant-based biodegradable polyurethane developed at UC San Diego. It fully discloses its materials, hemp, TENCEL Lyocell and organic cotton knit uppers with jute strobels and Soleic plant-oil soles, USDA BioPreferred 58% bio-based, but publishes no country of manufacture, no mill or factory names and no supplier list, so sourcing transparency is limited to material-level disclosure.

Feature 1Every BLUEVIEW shoe is built from plant-based materials: the upper is a machine-knitted Plant Knit of hemp, TENCEL Lyocell (eucalyptus fibre) and organic cotton with a jute strobel, and the insole, cupsole and outsole are Soleic. A biodegradable polyurethane made from plant oils created at UC San Diego over six years. The Pacific product page describes the upper as made from 100% plant-based yarns with a removable organic cotton canvas strap (the shoe can be worn as a loafer or a slip-on), and both the Pacific and the Atlantic are USDA BioPreferred certified at 58% bio-based content.
