How this was read, and where it does not hold up

What this scan could read

Lufthansa is read as an operator rather than a machine. Three things are measurable: how much sustainable aviation fuel is actually loaded rather than contracted, how new the fleet is, since newer aircraft deliver 15 to 25% better fuel efficiency, and whether a transition plan has dates and volumes attached. Lufthansa is investing in synthetic fuels, hydrogen fuel cell technology and zero emission prototypes. Research is not the same as fuel in the tank today, so this listing records the investment and separates it from what is currently burned.

Not recorded (2): Lufthansa publishes no per passenger kilometre emissions figure this read could use, and no cabin materials. Those are shown as unstated rather than estimated.

Red flags found while reading this brand
  • A SAF pledge is not SAF in the tank. Transport and Environment found only ten airlines worldwide with serious plans to move to green fuels. Ask what percentage is loaded today, on which routes, rather than what is contracted for a future year.
  • Net zero by 2050 is beyond any current management. A commitment three decades out carries no accountability. Fleet renewal and fuel loaded this year do.
  • SAF cuts lifecycle emissions by 50 to 80%, not 100%. And it is blended at a few percent, so a 1% blend cuts total flight emissions by well under one percent.
  • Offsetting is not reduction. The ASA now bans carbon neutral claims resting on offsets unless the offsets can be shown to work, after a Guardian investigation found more than 90% of schemes worthless.

Would a knock write it off?

No. Transport and Environment found only ten airlines worldwide with serious plans to move to green fuels. Ask what percentage is loaded today and on which routes, rather than what is contracted for a future year. SAF also cuts lifecycle emissions by 50 to 80 percent, not 100, and is blended at a few percent, so a 1 percent blend cuts total flight emissions by well under one percent.
Is the range figure on this page the one I will get?+
No, and no maker says so. Official range is measured at 23C with unrealistically gentle acceleration. Which? found a 16 percent average shortfall across UK market models, and in cold weather What Car? found no car came within 20 percent of its official figure, some short by nearly 40 percent. In mixed UK driving expect 70 to 80 percent of the brochure number.
Does animal free mean plastic free?+
No. The branded trims sold as vegan leather, Veganza, Sensatec, MB-Tex, Artico and SofTex among them, are polyurethane or PVC. PVC is softened with phthalates, which are endocrine disruptors, it does not biodegrade, and it sheds microplastics as it wears. Removing the animal is a real gain on welfare. It is not automatically a gain on materials.
If it has no tailpipe, does it pollute nothing?+
No. Non exhaust sources are now around 60 percent of roadside PM2.5 and 73 percent of PM10, and tyre wear alone runs over a thousand times the regulated exhaust limit. Battery electric vehicles cut brake dust by roughly 83 percent through regenerative braking but add tyre wear through weight, netting about 38 percent less total particulate than petrol. No maker publishes a tyre wear figure, and Euro 7 is the first rule to touch it.
What does carbon neutral mean on a vehicle?+
Usually offset rather than reduced. The ASA now bans carbon neutral and net zero claims resting on offsetting unless the offsets can be shown to work, after a Guardian investigation found more than 90 percent of offset schemes worthless. The ASA has already ruled against a car maker over an air quality claim. Check whether a claim describes emissions actually cut or emissions paid for elsewhere.
Am I buying the features, or renting them?+
Worth checking before you sign. Makers have charged a monthly fee for heated seats where the hardware was already fitted and paid for, and firmware for one 2024 model pointed to paid front heated seats alongside a range limited in software. Ask what stops working if you stop paying, and whether it passes to the next owner.
What is the car doing with my data?+
Mozilla reviewed 25 car brands and every one failed its privacy standard, the worst result of any product category it has assessed. 84 percent admit sharing personal data, 19 say they can sell it, and more than half share with government or law enforcement on request. Some policies list sexual activity, health, race and genetic information.
