The Spring Valley hike begins with a pickup at Argyle Airport and a drive across to the leeward coast, to a 250 acre farm that almost nobody sees. Your guide is the farmer who works it, which is rather the point: you are walking their land, not a path laid on for visitors.
The trail climbs through rainforest that has never been cleared, and you eat the whole way up. Papaya, mango, breadfruit, star fruit, lemons and cocoa come straight off the tree, and your guide stops to tell you what each plant is and what it is good for before you taste it. You gather salad from the ground as you go, and you leave with a box of fruit.
Further into the valley there are small waterfalls and a stream, and very little sound that is not water or birds. It finishes the way it should on St Vincent, with a coconut opened in front of you and the water drunk straight from it. Four hours, door to door.
