From the workshop in nature in the last article, you might assume a brand this small could not last. The proof says otherwise. Freedom Ecowear, Vivi’s made to order natural fibre label, has been backed twice by serious money for refusing to mass produce.
Vivi Rufino designs Freedom Ecowear and runs it with her partner David in La Vega in the Dominican Republic. The thing that gets me about the timing is how completely it contradicts the rulebook: the industry says refusing to scale kills a business, yet the recognition came precisely while she refused to scale. Winning Sustainable Business Prizes While Mass Producing Nothing
Vivi frames the timing as almost spiritual. “It’s crazy, because I feel that when you do things right, there’s this omnipresence, this higher thing that observes everything and doesn’t let it go,” she said. “We felt so guided through the whole process. Because in 2021, when we were struggling financially because of this promise, we were not producing anything.”

Then it happened again. “In 2024, we won another contest, this one by FedEx, Federal Express, another million pesos in capital seed,” Vivi said. “So I felt so backed up by the universe. Like, okay, this means we’re doing it right. We wouldn’t be winning all this if we were not doing the right thing.”
For her, the prizes were confirmation more than cash. “That was a confirmation for us. And that’s when David started believing.” David had been the reluctant one through the whole rebuild, the numbers man who was not convinced you could give up scale and survive. Two seed capital wins, from a major Dominican bank and a global logistics company, is a hard thing to argue against. It is the same brand that now ships to over 30 countries from a workshop in the bush.
Why Freedom Ecowear Still Will Not Lower Their Sustainable Swimwear Prices
The prizes did not push her toward volume or thinner margins. If anything, the opposite. She had spent years undercharging and burning out, and stopped. “I used to keep my margins very low, and we were just tired of working and we didn’t see any growth,” she said. “So I was like, you know what, I’m not going to limit myself, because there are so many people out there looking for this who have the money and want to buy it.”
And there is a principle under it. “If we lower the cost, we’ll also be paying less to our workers. The only ones that will benefit are our supply chain and the client,” she said. “Sustainability has six principles, and one of the main ones is that it has to be created for the common good of all. Everything has to be a win win situation for it to be sustainable.” Charging fairly is part of the ethics, not against them, the same logic that runs through her made to order, no waste model.
Proof The Ethical, Slow Fashion Swimwear Model Is Viable
We are told, constantly, that the only way to survive in fashion is to scale, to mass produce, to drive cost down. Vivi’s story is a quiet rebuttal. The recognition, the seed capital, the staying power, all arrived while she did the unscalable thing and refused to compromise.
