Gap

This report documents what Gap publishes about its ownership and supply chain — see the sourcing and transparency sections below. Gap’s supply-chain transparency is rated 4 out of 5.

Gap’s product range has not been scanned product-by-product to the Throne Standard, so no whole-catalogue fibre percentage is shown here — a headline fibre figure is only published once 100% of a catalogue has been read.

About Gap

On animals it avoids fur, down, angora and exotic skins but uses leather and wool without full source disclosure.
Gap garments are manufactured overseas in contract factories rather than owned facilities, spread across roughly 30 countries. As of October 2024, Gap Inc.’s largest apparel sourcing countries by value were Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and China (China had fallen to about 7% of the apparel sourcing base), with growing volume in Central America (notably Guatemala). Denim and woven bottoms are concentrated in Vietnam and Bangladesh; intimates, swimwear and performance wear largely in Sri Lanka; sweaters heavily in China. Gap Inc. publicly discloses its supplier factory names and locations.
Gap (the apparel brand, also styled GAP) was founded in 1969 by Donald Fisher and Doris F. Fisher, who opened the first store in San Francisco, California on 21 August 1969. Gap the brand is NOT independent: it is one of four namesake divisions of its publicly traded parent company Gap Inc. (NYSE: GAP, formerly GPS), which also owns Old Navy, Banana Republic and Athleta. The founding Fisher family retains significant ownership, with William S. Fisher holding roughly 16% and Robert J. Fisher roughly 15% of Gap Inc. shares. Headquarters remain in San Francisco. Verify: this is the American clothing retailer, distinct from unrelated same-name entities (e.g. GAP insurance products).
Gap is a real, currently-trading, legitimate business. It operates as a division of Gap Inc., the largest US specialty apparel company, which is publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker GAP and reported first-quarter fiscal 2026 results in May 2026 (ninth consecutive quarter of positive comparable sales). Gap Inc. ran approximately 3,569 stores as of 2025 under CEO Richard Dickson. The brand is not defunct or closed.
Gap is a large mass-market fast fashion retailer, not a slow or small-batch label. It produces high volumes across roughly 30 sourcing countries and hundreds of factories, sells through nearly 4,000 stores worldwide plus e-commerce, and is explicitly characterised by Good On You as a “fast fashion giant.” Its cotton-transition and recycled-material programmes are sustainability initiatives within a fast fashion business model, not evidence of slow-fashion production.
Gap is a mixed-material brand.
How we scan. Every figure comes from the Throne Standard scan: we read the fibre composition off each live product, style by style, and count only single-fibre plant cloth (cotton, linen, hemp) as natural. Animal and plastic-based synthetic fibres sit outside the plant-fibre figure, and regenerated fibres such as viscose, rayon, modal and Tencel are counted as semi-synthetic.
