What the label won’t tell you

The questions sensitive skin actually asks, answered

0/0 styles scanned, no sampling 91% plant · 8% synthetic ✓ read from the live product feed, not the marketing page
?Are there hidden chemicals against my skin?
~9% of people react to formaldehyde, common in wrinkle-free and easy-care finishes.
Dye process on record: see the sourcing ledger. We record the dye process and chemical flags for every brand.
?Is “100% cotton” actually 100%?
Most “cotton” underwear hides elastane or spandex in the waistband, exactly what sensitive skin reacts to.
We read all 0 styles individually: 91% plant, 8% synthetic. Even the elastics are bio-based, not spandex. We flag any style whose description hints at a trim.
?Is “sustainable” just greenwashing?
“Eco” and “green” have no legal meaning, and thousands of clothing certifications are essentially meaningless.
We scanned 0 styles from the store’s own product feed and publish a score only at full coverage.
?Will the elastic bring me out in a rash?
Latex and rubber in waistbands are a top trigger for contact dermatitis and latex allergy.
91% plant, 8% synthetic across the catalogue means the elastics aren’t spandex. Set your allergy profile and we only show you brands that clear it.
?Am I shedding microplastics onto my body?
Synthetic underwear sheds microplastics into skin and water with every wash.
91% plant fibre, plastic-free, so there’s zero synthetic to shed. Every style read individually, no sampling.
?Where is it really made, and by whom?
“Ethical” brands rarely name the farm or factory, so wage and safety claims cannot be checked.
We publish the full sourcing chain, farm and factory certifications, traceability level and the honest red flags, including where sources conflict. Traceability on record: see ledger.

Sources: consumer research on formaldehyde in easy-care fabrics (~9% of people react), PFAS in water- and stain-resistant finishes, and hypoallergenic underwear for eczema and contact dermatitis.

Straight answers

Is GRAMMAR sustainable and ethical?+
GRAMMAR is strongly sustainable on materials: our scan of 22 styles found 86.7% plant fibre (0.0% synthetic). Documented/verifiable facts: GOTS certification of GRAMMAR's fabrics is a third-party standard corroborated beyond the brand's own site; the brand really exists and trades; and the small-batch, NYC-sewn production model is consistently reported across the brand and independent outlets (Robb Report, ethical-clothing directories). Marketing/self-declared claims (not independently verified in sources
Where is GRAMMAR made?+
GRAMMAR garments are cut and sewn in New York City's Garment District (a factory on West 38th Street that the brand describes as woman- and BIPOC-owned and operated), while the fabric is woven abroad: its signature organic-cotton poplin is made at a mill in India that sources cotton from local farms, and a signature flannel is made at an organic-cotton mill in Japan. GRAMMAR states its buttons are produced in Italy from natural shell and horn (animal/food-industry byproducts). This split (fabric from India/Japan, garments assembled in NYC) is self-declared by the brand.
Who owns GRAMMAR?+
GRAMMAR (grammarnyc.com) is an independent, founder-owned New York City brand created by designer Althea Simons, with no parent company found in public sources. Simons conceived the brand in early 2016 after a fire destroyed her apartment building and possessions, and publicly launched GRAMMAR in November 2018 with a concentrated line of tailored white shirts. It remains privately held and independently operated; no acquisition, investor, or parent-group information is publicly documented.
Is GRAMMAR legit and worth it?+
GRAMMAR is a real, currently-trading legitimate business: its storefront at grammarnyc.com is live and operational, selling in-stock shirts at genuine prices (roughly $295 $375, with an active archive/sale section), and offering studio-visit booking plus published contact details. It is a small independent label, not defunct. (Note: verify it is the NYC clothing brand "GRAMMAR / Grammar NYC," distinct from unrelated same-name businesses in other industries.)
Is GRAMMAR fast fashion?+
GRAMMAR is a slow, small-batch fashion brand, not fast fashion. It produces a deliberately concentrated line (launched with about eight variations of the white shirt) locally in small batches in the NYC Garment District, positions itself around "fewer, better things" and timeless minimalist design meant to last, and prices its shirts at a premium ($295+), all of which is inconsistent with a high-volume fast-fashion model.
Is GRAMMAR non-toxic and safe for skin?+
GRAMMAR is largely non-toxic: 86.7% of its range is plant fibre that breathes and biodegrades, with 0.0% plastic-based synthetics that can shed microplastics. Certifications: GRAMMAR's only independently verified certification is GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) for its fabrics; the brand states all fabrics it sources are 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, and third-party ethical directories corroborate the GOTS claim. There is no public evidence that GRAMMAR itself holds OEKO-TEX, Fair Trade, or B Corp certification, and European Flax does not apply as GRAMMAR uses cotton, not linen. GRAMMAR also references International Labor Organization conventions, but that is a standard it cites rather than a certification it holds..
Is GRAMMAR certified?+
GRAMMAR does not publicly document a recognised textile certification such as GOTS or OEKO-TEX in the sources we checked. What we can confirm is the material itself: our scan of 22 GRAMMAR styles found 86.7% is 100% plant fibre, so GRAMMAR's natural-fibre standing rests on its composition rather than a certificate.
Is GRAMMAR 100% cotton?+
GRAMMAR is not entirely 100% cotton: our scan of 22 GRAMMAR styles found 86.7% is 100% plant fibre (mainly cotton), while 0.0% of GRAMMAR's range is synthetic, usually cotton blended with elastane for stretch. So many GRAMMAR basics are pure cotton, but GRAMMAR's fitted and active styles typically add a small share of synthetic.
