About Purified

Every Purified shoe is made from natural materials and marketed as plastic free, with the Abaca models built on a Bananatex upper made from the fibre of the abaca banana plant while the Hevea and Walden models use Mirum, a plastic free alternative to leather made from natural rubber, plant based oils, natural pigments and minerals. Underfoot, Purified fits a Pliant natural latex sole described as a 100% biobased outsole from USDA certified rubber, and lines each pair in organic cotton, so every product page states the shoes are 100% plastic free.
Purified makes every pair of its natural material shoes in Portugal, as stated on each individual product page.
Purified designs its plastic free shoes to safely return to the soil after their final wear, and the brand cites product page testing in which its materials sat in soil for 90 days with low toxicity while plants grown in that soil grew better than in regular compost.

What the label won’t tell you

The questions sensitive skin actually asks, answered

17/17 styles scanned, no sampling 100% plant · 0% synthetic PFAS-free (verified) ✓ read from the live product feed, not the marketing page
?Are there hidden chemicals against my skin?
~9% of people react to formaldehyde, common in wrinkle-free and easy-care finishes.
Purified is PFAS-free (verified). Dye process on record: Low-impact / GOTS-certified dyes. We record the dye process and chemical flags for every brand.
?Is “100% cotton” actually 100%?
Most “cotton” underwear hides elastane or spandex in the waistband, exactly what sensitive skin reacts to.
We read all 17 styles individually: 100% plant, 0% synthetic. Even the elastics are bio-based, not spandex. We flag any style whose description hints at a trim.
?Is “sustainable” just greenwashing?
“Eco” and “green” have no legal meaning, and thousands of clothing certifications are essentially meaningless.
We scanned 17 styles from the store’s own product feed and publish a score only at full coverage.
?Will the elastic bring me out in a rash?
Latex and rubber in waistbands are a top trigger for contact dermatitis and latex allergy.
100% plant, 0% synthetic across the catalogue means the elastics aren’t spandex. Set your allergy profile and we only show you brands that clear it.
?Am I shedding microplastics onto my body?
Synthetic underwear sheds microplastics into skin and water with every wash.
100% plant fibre, plastic-free, so there’s zero synthetic to shed. Every style read individually, no sampling.
?Where is it really made, and by whom?
“Ethical” brands rarely name the farm or factory, so wage and safety claims cannot be checked.
We publish the full sourcing chain, farm and factory certifications, traceability level and the honest red flags, including where sources conflict. Traceability on record: Not disclosed; factory: Not disclosed.

Sources: consumer research on formaldehyde in easy-care fabrics (~9% of people react), PFAS in water- and stain-resistant finishes, and hypoallergenic underwear for eczema and contact dermatitis.

How it was read: Every product listed in the brand's live catalogue is retrieved and its stated fibre composition read individually. From the product page, the store's own product data and its material labels. A fibre percentage is published only when 100% of the catalogue has been read. Straight answers

Is Purified sustainable and ethical?+
Purified is strongly sustainable on materials: our scan of all 17 styles found 100% plant fibre (0% synthetic, 0% animal). Documented facts about Purified: made in Portugal (country with a legal minimum wage and minimum working age of 16); an independent SATRA test under ISO 20020:2015 supports the specific soil-biodegradability claim; materials named by independent reviewers include MIRUM (plastic-free leather alternative), PLIANT natural latex, Bananatex/Abacá, organic cotton linings, upcycled wool insoles and lyoce
Where is Purified made?+
Purified garments (in fact its shoes, as it makes footwear only) are manufactured in Portugal by artisanal shoemakers, with whom Verona developed a glue-free/adhesive-free construction method (reportedly redesigning a machine to sew upper and sole without toxic glues). Portugal has a national minimum wage and a minimum working age of 16. Some raw materials are sourced further afield: Bananatex/Abacá fibre from the Philippines and PLIANT and MIRUM materials from Natural Fiber Welding (a US-based company).
Who owns Purified?+
Purified is an independent London-based footwear brand founded by shoe designer Will Verona, who launched it after encountering the Meethotamulla ("Trash Mountain") plastic-waste landfill in Sri Lanka while working in the industry (Verona had worked as a shoe designer from around 2017). The brand is independent and privately run by Verona, not owned by a parent company or conglomerate on record; it launched its first shoe (the ABACA) on/around 22 April 2024, based in London, UK. NOTE: Purified sells only footwear (plastic-free sneakers), not clothing/garments; it is the closest real match to the name "Purified" in the fashion/apparel space, and there are several unrelated same-name brands (e.g. Pure Clothing Ireland, Pure Apparel Australia, Pure Collection cashmere, Purified Clothing Co faith-based apparel) that are different companies.
Is Purified legit and worth it?+
Purified is a real, currently-trading legitimate business as of mid-2025. Its e-commerce site (purified.eco) is active with live inventory, GBP pricing and a functioning cart; shoes retail at roughly $165 to $191 (GBP equivalent). The brand has documented press coverage (TechRound, Footwear Plus, Sourcing Journal, FashionNetwork, 3DShoes) and independent reviews (Curiously Conscious rated the sneakers 9/10 in Feb 2025), and its shoes were worn by Prince William at the 2024 Earthshot Prize Awards. Not defunct.
Is Purified fast fashion?+
Purified is a small independent, slow-fashion oriented brand, not fast fashion. It sells a very limited range of footwear styles (e.g. ABACA, HEVEA, Walden) made to order by artisanal Portuguese shoemakers rather than in high-volume seasonal drops, and it emphasises durability and end-of-life biodegradability. Exact production volumes and whether it is strictly "small-batch" are Not publicly documented, but nothing indicates fast-fashion mass production.
Is Purified non-toxic and safe for skin?+
Purified is largely non-toxic: 100% of its range is plant fibre that breathes and biodegrades, with 0% plastic-based synthetics that can shed microplastics. Certifications: Purified does not appear to hold any of the standard textile certifications (no GOTS, OEKO-TEX, Fair Trade, B Corp, or European Flax certification was found in any reliable source). The one independent third-party verification on record is that the shoes' biodegradability/soil-enrichment claim was tested by SATRA (an independent footwear research and testing body) under ISO 20020:2015, over a 90-day soil exposure. This is a product test, not a brand or supply-chain certification. Beyond that, "Not publicly documented" for formal ethical/organic certifications..
Is Purified certified?+
Purified holds the following certifications: Purified does not appear to hold GOTS, OEKO-TEX, Fair Trade, B Corp, or European Flax certification (none are claimed by the brand or found in independent sources). Beyond any paper certification, our scan of 17 Purified styles found 100.0% is 100% plant fibre, which is the measurable material fact behind Purified's claims.
Is Purified 100% cotton?+
Our scan of all 17 Purified styles found 100% of the range is 100% plant fibre, with 0% animal fibre, 0% synthetic and 0% semi-synthetic. So many Purified basics are pure cotton, but Purified's fitted and active styles typically add a small share of synthetic.
