Hempalaya narrates its full chain publicly: wild Himalayan hemp harvested in the Far Western region of Nepal by local mountain tribes, fibre processed and spun by hand, yarn woven by master weavers in the Kathmandu Valley on backstrap and hand looms, and final garments assembled in ethical production houses in Pokhara with stated fair wages. This is a strong single-fibre, plant-based traceability story, but it is self-reported and uncertified, and Hempalaya does not name individual suppliers or publish third-party certifications.

Hempalaya is weak on materials: our scan of all 66 styles found 65% plant fibre (0% synthetic, 21.7% animal). DOCUMENTED FACTS: Registered active Austrian sole proprietorship since 2018 (Firmenbuch FN 489616z). Hemp is genuine plant fibre with a specifically named Nepalese supply chain (Far West Nepal to Kathmandu Valley to Pokhara). Products are handmade in small volumes. Hempalaya garments and bags are made in Nepal. Per Hempalaya's own supply-chain page, the wild Himalayan hemp is grown and harvested in Nepal's Far Western region (Bajura, Bajhang, Achham and Doti), fibre is hand-processed there over 3-5 weeks (sun-drying, water retting, hand-twisting), woven by master weavers in the Kathmandu Valley on backstrap and handlooms, and the finished products are assembled by craftswomen in production houses in Pokhara. The company (retail/design side) is based in Vienna, Austria.
Hempalaya is an independent Austrian brand founded and owned by Désirée Kudrys, who runs it with co-founder Jan; the two are described on the brand's own About page as nature-loving globetrotters from Vienna who conceived the brand during a one-year journey across Asia (Nepal). It is not owned by any parent company: the legal entity is the sole proprietorship "Hempalaya – Désirée Kudrys e.U." (Einzelunternehmen), registered in Austria's Firmenbuch under FN 489616z at the Vienna Commercial Court, VAT/UID ATU73331147, based at Aichhorngasse 5/26, 1120 Vienna. The Austrian business register (WKO) lists the business as active since 1 May 2018. Nepalese partners Dhiraj and Lalu are named as production collaborators, not owners.
Hempalaya is a real, currently-trading, legitimate business as of July 2026. Its website (hempalaya.com) is live and selling in EUR (with a posted vacation notice: orders shipping from 20 July after a 5-19 July pause), and its legal existence is confirmed in Austria's official Firmenbuch as "Hempalaya – Désirée Kudrys e.U." (FN 489616z, active since 1 May 2018), cross-listed by WKO, firmeninfo.at and firmenabc.at. This is the hemp clothing/accessories brand, not to be confused with same-name entities in other industries.
Hempalaya is a small-batch, slow-fashion brand, not fast fashion. It is a single-owner Austrian sole proprietorship selling a small handmade catalogue (roughly 40 live styles: hemp bags, backpacks, scarves, caps, plus wool accessories) produced by artisan women's workshops and family sewing houses in Nepal using hand-processing that takes weeks per batch. There is no evidence of high-volume, trend-driven, rapid-turnover production characteristic of fast fashion.

The brand uses self-declared descriptors ("eco-friendly," "vegan," "sustainable," "fair-trade practices" / "fair wage") but these are unverified marketing claims, not accredited certifications..
