Best Eco Stays in Curaçao
Where to stay in Curacao, the short answer
The best area to stay in Curacao depends on the trip you want, with options spread from Willemstad, Sint Michiel, Sint Willibrordus to Sabana Westpunt. Every stay we recommend below is genuinely sustainable and chosen so your money stays on the island.
Where to stay in Curacao by area, at a glance
Willemstad (Pietermaai and Punda), best for first timers, culture and nightlife lovers, walkers who want restaurants on the doorstep
Curacao has one airport, Curacao International (CUR), and central Willemstad is roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive away, with the historic core compact enough to explore on foot so you can manage without a car if you mostly stay in town. Punda is the postcard heart with the famous candy coloured Handelskade buildings, floating market and shops, while neighbouring Pietermaai is the restored boutique quarter often called the SoHo of Curacao, packed with bars, cafes and waterfront restaurants, suiting anyone who wants history, dining and nightlife within walking distance.
Where to stay in Willemstad

Morena Eco Resort is a top place to stay in Willemstad, Curacao
Morena Eco Resort is the pioneering eco resort on Curaçao, set in Jan Thiel near Willemstad and certified by Green Globe, Green Key and Travelife.
A solar water heater on every room generates a full day of hot water from one hour of sun, a greywater system recycles waste water into the garden, and 80 per cent of the native vegetation was preserved during a build made from regionally sourced fair trade materials, with Restaurant Fuego leaning on fresh tropical produce.
LionsDive Beach Resort is a top place to stay in Willemstad, Curacao
LionsDive Beach Resort is a Green Key certified dive resort on Mambo Beach near Willemstad, fronted by its own house reef and the PADI five star Ocean Encounters dive centre.
An 864 panel solar array supplies roughly 70 per cent of the resort’s daily energy, treated wastewater nourishes the gardens, and guests dive and snorkel for a purpose with the Reef Renewal Foundation Curaçao, touring the coral nurseries it maintains on the reef.
Sint Michiel, best for beach and watersports lovers, divers, families wanting a quieter base near the city
Sint Michiel sits on the central west coast, about a 15 to 20 minute drive from both Curacao International (CUR) and central Willemstad, and a hire car is worth having here to reach beaches and the capital easily. It is a small, relaxed former fishing village built around Boka Sami bay and the Blue Bay marina and beach area, suiting travellers who want easy snorkelling and diving and a calmer base while staying close to town.
Where to stay in Sint Michiel

Mondi Lodge is a top place to stay in Sint Michiel, Curacao
Mondi Lodge is a locally owned, family run eco lodge in Klein Sint Michiel near Willemstad, founded in 2014 by the de Haseth family with daughter Danita at the helm after she returned to her birth island.
Its six wooden palapas sit on poles under thatched palm roofs, water is heated by solar panels and the garden irrigated with groundwater, the lodge grows its own fruit and vegetables, and a chlorine free magnesium pool sits in a tropical garden alive with iguanas, hummingbirds and parakeets.
Sint Willibrordus, best for nature lovers, couples after peace and quiet, those touring the island's beaches by car
Sint Willibrordus lies on the western side of the island, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive from Curacao International (CUR), and a hire car is essential as it is rural with little to walk to. This sleepy village is known for the salt flats where flamingos often gather and for nearby beaches such as Cas Abao and Porto Mari, suiting couples and nature lovers who want quiet countryside within reach of the west coast’s best swimming spots.
Where to stay in Sint Willibrordus

Villa San Sebastian Curaçao is a top place to stay in Sint Willibrordus, Curacao
Villa San Sebastian Curaçao is an eco lodge in Sint Willibrordus owned and run by Mary and Huib, with lush native gardens drawing in wild birds.
The studios run on solar energy with solar heated water on the roofs, draw on deep well water and rainwater collection, separate and recycle their waste, and feed greywater from the kitchens and showers to a small forest of banana trees beside the villa.
Sabana Westpunt, best for divers, off grid and nature seekers, anyone wanting the wildest end of the island
Sabana Westpunt is at the far western tip of Curacao, around a 40 minute drive from Curacao International (CUR), and a hire car (ideally an SUV for the rougher back roads to hidden coves) is needed out here. This is the island’s remote, undeveloped end, close to Westpunt and Playa Kalki, the Shete Boka National Park and some of Curacao’s best diving and snorkelling, suiting divers and travellers happy to trade nightlife and shops for nature and seclusion.
Where to stay in Sabana Westpunt

Best West Eco Lodge & Leisure is a top place to stay in Sabana Westpunt, Curacao
Best West Eco Lodge & Leisure is a small, oceanfront eco lodge on the wild west coast at Sabana Westpunt, built primarily from certified sustainable TLC hardwood for a low impact footprint.

When is the best time to visit Curacao?
Curacao is warm and sunny year round, with daytime temperatures generally around 26C to 31C, and it sits well south of the main Atlantic hurricane belt so direct hurricane hits are very rare even though the official Atlantic season runs 1 June to 30 November. The drier, brighter months run broadly from January to September, while the wettest period is roughly October to December, though showers tend to be short and often fall at night. Peak season is December to April with the best weather and highest prices, while May to November is the value window with notably cheaper rooms and still plenty of sunshine.
Is Curacao safe, and how do you get around?
Curacao is considered one of the safer Caribbean islands for visitors, with violent crime against tourists rare, though sensible precautions apply: do not leave valuables visible in a parked car, lock up and avoid poorly lit areas late at night. They drive on the right, roads are generally good and traffic is relaxed, but a hire car is recommended for everywhere except central Willemstad, and an SUV helps on the rougher unpaved tracks to the far western beaches; a UK licence is accepted. The local currency is the Netherlands Antillean guilder, but US dollars are widely accepted, cards are common in tourist areas, and tipping around 10 to 15 percent in restaurants is appreciated where a service charge is not already included.
