What Makes Clothing Truly Biodegradable?

Truly biodegradable clothing is 100% natural fibre clothing, plant fibres like organic cotton, linen and hemp that return to soil instead of shedding plastic. A cotton tee with polyester thread or an elastane waistband is not biodegradable, whatever the label claims, which is why we read the composition off the tag first.

Biodegradable Clothing Brands We Have Tested

Below is our tested list of biodegradable clothing brands. The ones that hold up are single-fibre: 100% organic cotton, 100% linen, 100% hemp. Anything blended with synthetics we flag, because natural clothing materials and plastic mixes do not compost the same way. See the full tested data on our natural fibre clothing brands hub.

By the strict test, every item 100% plant fibre with no plastic thread, eight brands pass. These are the clothing brands that are genuinely biodegradable, each read label by label:

What You Put On Your Body Is a Sacred Act

Clothing is intimate. It lives against our skin and moves with us through the world. Yet fast fashion has made it a source of harm, flooding the planet with pollution, toxic chemicals, and synthetic fibres that dishonour both people and Earth. Choose to dress with intention. Explore brands crafted with natural fibres, fair wages, and reverence for the body and the planet.

Does Biodegradable Clothing Exist?

Yes, biodegradable clothing exists, but only when it is 100% natural fibre. Clothing made from plant fibres like organic cotton, linen and hemp breaks down in soil, while any polyester thread, elastane waistband or nylon blend stops a garment biodegrading. The biodegradable clothing brands here are the single-fibre ones, read by label.

See the full tested data on our natural fibre clothing brands hub.

Is organic cotton biodegradable?

Organic cotton is biodegradable when organic cotton is left unblended. Organic cotton is a plant fibre, so organic cotton composts fully and returns to soil. The risk with organic cotton is the trims: a polyester thread, an elastane waistband or a nylon zip stops the garment breaking down, which is why we read the full composition of every organic cotton piece.

Are hemp and linen biodegradable?

Hemp and linen are biodegradable, and hemp and linen break down faster than almost any other fibre. Hemp and linen are bast plant fibres that return to soil quickly and grow on very little water. Hemp and linen need no synthetic finish when hemp and linen are left undyed or plant dyed, so hemp and linen are the cleanest composting fibres we test.

Is Tencel, bamboo or viscose biodegradable?

Tencel, bamboo and viscose are only partly biodegradable, and not the way plant fibre is. Tencel, viscose and modal are semi-synthetic, made by dissolving wood pulp in chemicals and spinning it into fibre, and most fabric sold as bamboo is really viscose. Tencel, bamboo and viscose break down more slowly than cotton or hemp and carry a chemical footprint, so Hold The Throne does not count Tencel, bamboo or viscose as truly biodegradable.

Is recycled polyester biodegradable?

Recycled polyester is not biodegradable. Recycled polyester is still plastic, so recycled polyester sheds microplastics in the wash and never composts. A brand built on recycled polyester is not a biodegradable brand, however green the recycled polyester marketing sounds.

Why do other lists include brands that are not biodegradable?

Other biodegradable clothing lists include brands that are not biodegradable because those lists count semi-synthetic Tencel and recycled polyester as eco. Hold The Throne does not count Tencel or recycled polyester as biodegradable. Hold The Throne reads the fibre composition of every product and only passes a brand when the clothing is 100% plant, which is why this biodegradable list is shorter and stricter than most.

What are the best biodegradable clothing brands?

The best biodegradable clothing brands are the ones that are 100% plant across the whole range. Purified and Hemptees are the purest biodegradable brands Hold The Throne has tested, with every item 100% plant. Terra Thread, Kent, Nazeerah, Hemptique, Cosiol and The Classic T-Shirt Company complete the biodegradable brands on the tested list above.

Is there biodegradable clothing for women and men?

There is biodegradable clothing for both women and men. The biodegradable brands above make organic cotton, hemp and linen basics for women and men, from tees and shirts to underwear. Every biodegradable piece on this list is a plant fibre, so biodegradable clothing suits anyone who wants garments that compost instead of shedding plastic.
