The brand

About Alpkit

Alpkit designs, cuts and stitches part of its range in its own UK factory near the Peak District, having made outdoor gear in Britain since it was founded in 2004, and it is a certified B Corporation with a score of 122.6.
Alpkit runs an in-store Repair Station that repairs its own and any other brand’s clothing and equipment, offering zip, patch, reproofing and down wash services, and its Continuum take-back scheme has rehomed over 20 tonnes of used gear through charitable partners.

Alpkit is not a B Corp. The brand-level labels are thinner than the product-level ones.

What the label won’t tell you

The questions sensitive skin actually asks, answered

2758/2758 styles scanned, no sampling 28% plant · 72% synthetic PFAS-free (brand claim) ✓ read from the live product feed, not the marketing page
?Are there hidden chemicals against my skin?
~9% of people react to formaldehyde, common in wrinkle-free and easy-care finishes.
Alpkit is PFAS-free (brand claim). Dye process on record: see the sourcing ledger. We record the dye process and chemical flags for every brand.
?Is “100% cotton” actually 100%?
Most “cotton” underwear hides elastane or spandex in the waistband, exactly what sensitive skin reacts to.
We read all 2758 styles individually: 28% plant, 72% synthetic. Even the elastics are bio-based, not spandex. We flag any style whose description hints at a trim.
?Is “sustainable” just greenwashing?
“Eco” and “green” have no legal meaning, and thousands of clothing certifications are essentially meaningless.
We scanned 2758 styles from the store’s own product feed and publish a score only at full coverage.
?Will the elastic bring me out in a rash?
Latex and rubber in waistbands are a top trigger for contact dermatitis and latex allergy.
28% plant, 72% synthetic across the catalogue means the elastics aren’t spandex. Set your allergy profile and we only show you brands that clear it.
?Am I shedding microplastics onto my body?
Synthetic underwear sheds microplastics into skin and water with every wash.
28% plant fibre, plastic-free, so there’s zero synthetic to shed. Every style read individually, no sampling.
?Where is it really made, and by whom?
“Ethical” brands rarely name the farm or factory, so wage and safety claims cannot be checked.
We publish the full sourcing chain, farm and factory certifications, traceability level and the honest red flags, including where sources conflict. Traceability on record: Not disclosed; factory: China (24 factories: Wuhan, Huizhou, Guangzhou, Quanzhou, Xiamen, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Dalian, Dongguan, Shenzhen, Zhongshan), Taiwan (9: Taichung, Kaohsiung), UK (3: Nottingham, Darlington), plus Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh), Bulgaria (Trilistnik), Germany, Belgium (Antwerp), Italy (Asolo), Japan (Osaka) and US.

Sources: consumer research on formaldehyde in easy-care fabrics (~9% of people react), PFAS in water- and stain-resistant finishes, and hypoallergenic underwear for eczema and contact dermatitis.

Alpkit publishes a full, named Tier 1 factory list of roughly 42 factories giving each factory’s location, products, ownership, audit status and length of relationship, and makes about 30% of its range in its own UK workshop (AKHQ, Nottingham). Alpkit’s factories are mainly in China (24), Taiwan (9) and the UK (3), plus Vietnam, Bulgaria, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Japan and the US, all screened against the ETI Base Code and audited annually. Alpkit uses non-mulesed merino from named supplier Solarwool Apparel and states it uses no cotton from high-risk regions, though it does not trace cotton to specific farms; Alpkit is a certified B Corp (score 122.6).

Sourcing flags & notes: Disclosure is strongest at Tier 1; raw materials are not traced to farm or spinning level (cotton origin described only as 'not high-risk'); Tier 2/3 and fibre origins remain largely undisclosed.

Is Alpkit sustainable and ethical?+
Documented facts (from Alpkit's own disclosures and independent sources): B Corp certification 2020 (95.1) and 2024 recertification (122.6); Living Wage Foundation accreditation; GOTS-or-BCI-only cotton policy; a stated ban on cotton from Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and the Xinjiang region; a policy that suppliers agree to the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) base code as a minimum with senior-manage
Where is Alpkit made?+
Alpkit garments and gear are made in a mix of locations. According to its own supply-chain disclosures, the majority of Alpkit's suppliers are based in China, the UK and Taiwan. A "Made in Britain" range (bikepacking bags, custom bags, bouldering mats, and Sonder bikes/wheels) is designed, cut and stitched at the Alpkit Campus on the edge of the Peak District (Nottinghamshire). Most technical clothing is still made overseas, though Alpkit has publicly stated a goal to shift about 15% of production out of higher-risk sourcing regions toward EU and UK suppliers. It does not publish a full factory-by-factory list publicly.
Who owns Alpkit?+
Alpkit (registered as Alpkit Ltd, HQ 3 Coombe Rd, Newthorpe, Nottinghamshire, NG16 3SU, England) is an independent, co-founder-led and co-founder-owned UK outdoor gear and clothing company founded in 2004 by four friends: Nick Smith, Jim Evans, Col Stocker and Kenny Stocker, who had previously worked together at Rab. It is not owned by a larger parent group; instead it is broadly held, with over 4,000 customer and staff shareholders arising from two crowdfunding raises. Alpkit also owns the bike brand Sonder (launched 2015) and the waxed-canvas bag maker Trakke. Its first products (sleeping bags) launched in 2005, initially sold online and at festivals.
Is Alpkit legit and worth it?+
Alpkit is a real, currently-trading, legitimate UK business (Alpkit Ltd). As of 2024-2025 it operates an online store, around 10 physical stores across the UK plus a Munich (Germany) location opened in 2024, a UK manufacturing facility near the Peak District, and publishes annual sustainability reports. This is the outdoor clothing/gear brand, distinct from any similarly named entity in other industries.
Is Alpkit fast fashion?+
Alpkit is not fast fashion. It is a direct-to-consumer outdoor performance brand built around durable, technical, repairable gear rather than seasonal fashion cycles. Its stated ethos is "Gear You Love For Longer," it runs a repairs/refurbishment programme, offers a 25-year "Alpine Bond" guarantee on UK-made bags, and produces some limited/small-batch UK-made runs. It sells at accessible prices via a DTC model, but its product philosophy, longevity focus and B Corp/Living Wage credentials place it in the slow/durable-gear category, not fast fashion.
Is Alpkit non-toxic and safe for skin?+
Certifications: Alpkit is a Certified B Corporation (first certified 2020 with a score of 95.1; recertified in 2024 with a score of 122.6) and holds Living Wage Foundation accreditation (2020). For cotton, Alpkit's own responsible-cotton-sourcing policy states that only GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or BCI (Better Cotton Initiative) certified cotton goes into its products. Independent verification: Ethical Consumer Magazine has named Alpkit products "Best Buy." No public evidence was found that Alpkit holds Fair Trade, OEKO-TEX, bluesign, or European Flax certifications as a company (Not publicly documented for those four). Note: GOTS/BCI apply at the cotton/material level, not company-wide..
Is Alpkit certified?+
Alpkit holds the following certifications: Alpkit is a Certified B Corporation (first certified 2020 with a score of 95. Beyond any paper certification, our scan of 161 Alpkit styles found 10.1% is 100% plant fibre, which is the measurable material fact behind Alpkit's claims.
What is Alpkit made of?+
The most common fibres in the Alpkit styles we read were polyester and nylon. That composition is the measurable fact behind what Alpkit is made of, so check the specific Alpkit label for any individual piece.
