The answer, here, is that they are never made. Globally an estimated truckload of textiles is landfilled or burned every second, and made to order is one of the few models that simply opts out of producing the waste in the first place. Nothing Is Cut Until Your Made To Order Bikini Is Bought
“When the customer places an order, they begin cutting,” Vivi told me, standing over the big cutting table. “They begin sewing. They put the pieces together and package everything here on site within a certain time frame, and then ship it out.”
The whole point is what is missing. “Made to order means that there’s no batches of stock lying around.” No room of unsold bikinis quietly losing value. She has watched what happens at the other end of the mass model. “So many unworn clothes ends up in landfills,” she said. “Some brands even burn their dead stock.” Made to order never builds that pile. It is the cleanest end of the slow fashion spectrum, and the no plastic packaging carries the same logic right to your door.
The Five Day Wait For Made To Order Swimwear, And Why Fast Fashion Broke Our Patience
The nerves usually hit a few days in, and Vivi understands exactly why. “People are so used to fast fashion, so they don’t really grasp the concept fully of what slow fashion means, where there’s real humans actually making these for you,” she said. “Sometimes you have to email them several times to let them know, remember, this is made to order.”
She has seen the panic up close. “At first, if you’re a first customer, you will get desperate sometimes, because they’ll be like, where’s my order? I ordered five days ago, what is it, I haven’t received a shipping number. In the description it says it’s made to order and takes around five business days to create. They usually skip that one.”
The Data Behind The Next Step For Sustainable Swimwear, Small Batches
Made to order is not the final form, and this is the bit people miss. Vivi calls small batches the pinnacle, and it runs on numbers, not vibes. “The pinnacle of slow fashion is small batches. That’s what we aim for,” she said. “But that’s only possible if you have enough data and enough orders coming in. Made to order is great to start.”
A batch has a precise size. “For us, a small batch is 24 pieces of one style, one color, and that will carry you through, maybe a month.” It is patterned on nature. “If you see nature, repeat the leaf in a branch. It doesn’t create one leaf at a time. It starts repeating the pattern, the DNA. And I love applying that. But that’s only possible if you have enough resources and enough demand.” David, who handles the figures, keeps it grounded. “It’s all about numbers,” he said. “I’m just the creative side of the brand that makes sure it works, that it survives.” Their first small batch, the best selling minimal set and the blue bikinis, was planned around exactly that data.
